Convert PNG images to WebP on your device. Keep transparency, choose lossless or lossy compression, then download one image or a whole batch.

Privacy first — no image uploads
WebP options

Both modes keep transparency. Lossless preserves decoded pixels.

Not used

Used only in lossy mode. Higher quality usually means a larger file.

Choose settings before adding images. They apply to the whole batch.

50 MB per file · 200 MB per batch · Up to 100 files

Also accepts JPG, WebP, GIF and AVIF. Animated images become a still WebP.

Formats, limits and what is preserved

Up to 24 megapixels and 16,383 pixels per side. WebP results are limited to 256 MB in total, and images are processed one at a time. Large images may take longer; you can stop unfinished conversions. Output is a still image. Original metadata and color profiles are not copied. Colors and eight-bit pixels follow your browser’s image decoding.

Convert PNG to WebP, without uploading your images

Create WebP images for a website from PNG screenshots, logos, artwork or photos. This free online converter works on your device, keeps transparency and creates real .webp files. Choose lossless for precise graphics, or lossy when a different balance of detail and file size suits your image. No account or watermark is added.

How to convert a PNG file to WebP

  1. Choose lossless or lossy compression. Lossless is selected by default. For lossy output, choose a quality from 1 to 100. Choose files or drop your .png images into the converter.
  2. Wait for Ready to download. Check each WebP preview, dimensions and file size. Settings stay fixed for the batch; Clear all lets you choose new settings.
  3. Choose Download WebP for one image, or Download all WebPs (ZIP) for the ready images. Extract the ZIP to use the WebP files. Your original PNG images stay unchanged.

Convert PNG to WebP in bulk

Choose up to 100 local files for one batch. Images convert one at a time to limit memory use, with individual previews, status and downloads. Add more files with the same settings, stop unfinished work or remove a file. A damaged image does not block the rest. The ZIP contains only ready WebPs and gives duplicate filenames unique names.

Keep transparent backgrounds

WebP supports fully and partly transparent pixels in both lossless and lossy modes. Transparent logos, icons and cutouts keep their transparent areas; the checkerboard in the preview is only a viewing aid. This tool does not remove an existing background. To convert in the other direction, use WebP to PNG.

Lossless or lossy WebP: which should I choose?

Lossless preserves the eight-bit pixels decoded by your browser and works well for text, logos and sharp edges. Lossy can reduce file size by discarding some detail; compare the result for artifacts, especially around small text. Its quality setting defaults to 80. Quality 100 is still lossy, so select Lossless when that is what you need. Neither mode guarantees a smaller file than PNG, and converting cannot recover detail missing from the original.

Convert PNG to WebP on Windows, Mac or a phone

Use this page in a current Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge browser. On a computer, drag files from your folder or use Choose files. On iPhone, iPad or Android, use Choose files to open the system file picker; saved downloads are usually available through Files or Downloads. No converter installation is needed. Keep this tab open until your download starts.

Create a real WebP image for your website

Renaming .png to .webp changes only the filename. This converter encodes WebP image data that current browsers can display, then downloads a .webp file. Save the result in your website project and use its path in your image markup. Compare its size and appearance with the PNG before replacing it. Local files are accepted; remote image URLs are not fetched through a server.

Your files stay on your device

Conversion and ZIP creation run in your browser. Image bytes, filenames, thumbnails and sizes are not sent to our servers or analytics, and files are not saved to browser storage. Clear all or close the tab to discard the working batch. The page uses website analytics, but your images and file details are hidden from session recordings.

PNG to WebP questions

Is this PNG to WebP converter free?

Yes. Convert and download images without payment, signup or watermarks. There is a 50 MB limit per file and a 200 MB limit per batch, plus the image-dimension limits shown above.

Can I convert multiple PNG files to WebP at once?

Yes. Choose or drop up to 100 files. They share the compression settings chosen before you added them. Download ready WebPs individually or together in a ZIP.

Does PNG to WebP keep transparency?

Yes. Both compression modes keep transparent and partly transparent areas. The preview checkerboard is not saved into the image. Existing opaque backgrounds are not removed.

What happens to an animated PNG?

An animated PNG becomes its default still image or first animation frame, depending on the source file. Animated GIF and WebP inputs become their first frame. A warning appears beside the result; animation is not preserved.

Why is my WebP larger than the PNG?

Compression depends on image content and the source PNG’s optimization. Small or well-compressed PNGs can be smaller than a new WebP, especially in lossless mode. Check the measured sizes. If a smaller file matters more than exact decoded pixels, clear the batch and try lossy compression.

Can I just rename .png to .webp?

No. The extension does not change the image data. Convert the file to produce a real WebP image that an app expecting WebP can read.

Are metadata, color profiles and 16-bit PNG values preserved?

No. Output is a new encoding of the browser-decoded eight-bit image. Original metadata, resolution tags and color profiles are not copied, and 16-bit channel precision is not retained. Image orientation is applied to the displayed pixels. Keep the original when those details matter.

Why will an image not convert?

Check the message beside the file. It may be damaged, exceed a size or dimension limit, or use a format your browser cannot decode. SVG, HEIC and PDF are not supported. Large images may need more memory or time; try a smaller image. Ready WebPs remain downloadable.

Is quality 100 the same as lossless WebP?

No. The quality slider controls lossy encoding, including at 100. Choose the separate Lossless mode to preserve the decoded pixels. Lossless does not preserve original PNG bytes or undo changes made when your browser decodes color or higher-bit-depth images.
